Le groupe s'est formé en 1979 dans les ghettos de South Central Los Angeles. Fishbone joue un mélange unique de ska, punk, funk, métal, reggae et soul qui fait d'eux les pionniers du style fusion, qui allait faire tant d'émules dans les années 90.
7 albums au compteur, plus ou moins réussis. On s'attardera plus volontiers sur Truth and Soul de 1988 et sur While the band retained their roots in funk and ska en 1993.
